What to Text After a First Date (And When to Send It)

By the DateViser team · Last updated

Short answer: text the same day or the next day. Say you had a good time, mention one specific moment, and say you would like to see them again. In Hinge's 2025 survey of more than 3,000 daters, 75% said they expect a follow-up message the same day or the next day.1

What the data says

Hinge Labs surveyed more than 3,000 daters worldwide in April 2025 about what happens after a first date.1 The findings are reassuring for anyone staring at their phone:

Put together: almost everyone wants the message, half of people are too nervous to send it, and hardly anyone wants to go first. If you enjoyed the date, sending a warm, simple text puts you ahead.

The formula: thanks, one specific moment, see you again

  1. Thanks or "I had a great time". Plain enthusiasm is the thing people find most attractive in a follow-up.
  2. One specific moment. Something they said, something that made you laugh, a detail only the two of you know. It proves the message is for them.
  3. Interest in meeting again. You do not need a full plan. Saying you would like to see them again is enough; add a plan if you have one.

Hinge's own example follows the same pattern: "I really enjoyed spending time with you tonight. Would love to see you again if you're feeling the same."1

Examples

The same evening

Home safe! I had a really good time tonight. I'm still laughing about your karaoke story.

Thanks for tonight. Best first date I've had in a long time. Let me know you got home okay?

The next day, with a second date in mind

I had a great time yesterday. You still owe me a rematch at pool. Free next weekend?

Still thinking about that dessert, and the company wasn't bad either. I'd love to see you again. Dinner next week?

Yesterday was fun. I want to hear the end of the Portugal story. Drink on Thursday?

You are not sure how you feel

Thanks for yesterday, I enjoyed meeting you. Hope the rest of your weekend is good!

Friendly and honest, without promising a second date you have not decided on. You can follow up in a day or two once you know.

You are not interested

Thanks for meeting up, it was nice getting to know you. I didn't feel a romantic connection, but I wish you all the best.

One kind, clear message is better than slowly going silent. It takes thirty seconds and spares the other person days of wondering.

They have not texted and you want to

I had a really nice time on Friday. I'd like to do it again if you're up for it.

Remember that half of daters hold back for fear of seeming too keen. Their silence may be nerves, not a verdict. Send one message. If there is no reply after that, take it as your answer and leave it there.

What not to send

Keep the conversation going

Once they reply, ask about something they told you on the date. In Hinge's 2025 survey of about 30,000 of its daters, 85% said they are more likely to want a second date when they are asked thoughtful questions, yet only 30% of heterosexual Gen Z daters felt their dates ask enough of them.2 Curiosity is rare, and it is noticed.

Frequently asked questions

How soon should I text after a first date?

The same day or the next day. In Hinge's 2025 survey of more than 3,000 daters, 75% said they expect a follow-up message either the same day or the next day. There is no benefit to waiting three days.

Who should text first after a first date?

Whoever wants to. In the same Hinge survey only 11% of daters said they want to be the one who sends the first message, which means most people are waiting for the other person. If you had a good time, being the one who says so is an advantage.

Is texting the same night too eager?

No. A short message the same evening, thanking them and mentioning something you enjoyed, is what most people hope to receive. Eager only becomes a problem when it turns into many messages or pressure for an immediate answer.
