How to Restart a Dead Conversation on a Dating App (Without Seeming Desperate)

By the DateViser team · Last updated

Short answer: to restart a dead dating-app conversation, send one light message that is easy to answer and does not mention the silence: a callback to something they said, a new specific question, a small update from your life, or a concrete plan. Send it once. If there is still no reply, move on.

Why conversations go quiet

Most stalled chats die of neglect, not rejection. The other person was busy, the last message had no question in it, the app sent the notification at a bad time, or several conversations were going at once. Silence is also simply common on dating apps: in Pew Research Center's national survey, 64% of men who had used dating sites or apps said they had felt insecure because of the lack of messages they received, and 54% of women said they had felt overwhelmed by how many they got.1 A quiet chat is normal, and it is rarely about you.

First, look at the last message in the thread. If it was yours and it ended with a statement ("haha yeah", "same", "sounds fun"), there was nothing for them to answer. That is good news: the fix is a better message, not a better you.

Four kinds of message that restart a chat

1. The callback

Refer back to something they told you. It shows you listened, and it picks the conversation up where it was good.

Did you ever finish that series you were complaining about? I need to know if the ending is worth it.

I walked past a ramen place today and thought of your very strong opinions. Still undefeated?

How did the presentation go? You were dreading it last time we talked.

2. The new, specific question

Change the subject completely with something quick and fun to answer.

Settle a debate for me: is a hot dog a sandwich?

Random question: what's the best concert you've ever been to?

I need a recommendation. One film I have to watch this weekend, go.

3. The small update

Share something from your day that connects to them, then hand the turn back.

I tried the climbing gym you mentioned. My arms are jelly. How do you do this twice a week?

Just made the pasta you recommended. 7 out of 10, and the 3 missing points are my fault. What did I do wrong?

Update: I finally booked the trip. Any Lisbon tips from your last visit?

4. The concrete plan

If the chat was going well before it faded, the missing ingredient is often momentum. Suggest meeting.

We never did settle the best-coffee argument. Want to test your place on Saturday morning?

I think we've proven we're both terrible at texting. Drink this week instead?

There's a night market on Thursday that looks like your kind of chaos. Want to go?

What not to send

These end conversations for good

???

Guess you're not interested then

Wow, okay

Hey stranger, did I do something wrong?

Anything that mentions the silence makes the other person feel guilty, and guilt is not attractive. The best restart messages read as if no time has passed.

Ask, don't announce

Whichever type you choose, end with a question. Research from Harvard published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology found that people who ask more questions, particularly follow-up questions, are better liked by their conversation partners.2 A question also solves the practical problem: it tells the other person exactly what to reply.

The one-follow-up rule

Send one restart message and then leave it. If they answer, carry on as if nothing happened. If they do not, you have a clear answer without having said anything you will regret. If the other person told you they need space or are not interested, that is not a dead conversation to revive: reply graciously, or not at all, and let it go.

Frequently asked questions

How long should I wait before texting again after no reply?

Give it a few days. A follow-up sent within hours reads as pressure, while a relaxed message a few days later reads as someone with their own life who thought of something to say. There is no exact number; what matters is that you send one message, not several.

Is double texting bad?

One follow-up after a few days of silence is fine and often works, because conversations frequently stall for boring reasons. A string of follow-ups, or a follow-up that complains about the silence, is what comes across badly.

What if they still don't reply?

Then you have your answer, and you got it politely. Do not send a third message, do not ask what went wrong, and do not unmatch in anger. Leave it and focus on conversations where the other person replies.
